Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe is expected to grace with his presence, the 15th year anniversary of OUT LGBT-Wellbeing, in a Gala dinner that will be held at Theatre On The Track in Kyalami on 17 September 2010.
A Non-profit organisation based in Tshwane, OUT has over the years done remarkable work providing direct health and mental health services to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) clients in Tshwane and surrounding areas including targeted HIV/AIDS work, telephone counseling and information line work, a vibrant community centre and a clinic among others.
OUT has also been involved with various research projects, many of them in collaboration with leading national and international partners. The organisation has also successfully run the Advocacy and Mainstreaming Programme which aims to ensure legal equality and translating this to day to day experiences of LGBT people.
It is for this reason OUT is acknowledged as one of most important institutions in the gay community in Gauteng and as it celebrates 15 years of its existence, the organisation said the event will be a special night both to commemorate the successes of OUT and an opportunity to contribute towards the “much needed and respected” NGO’s continued work in providing “vital” health and wellbeing services.
Even so, Lizette Stassen, Office Manger at OUT said, “We haven’t achieved everything that OUT wants to achieve, because if we did there wouldn’t be a need for this organisation anymore.”
Stassen added that need for organisations like OUT remains huge, particularly because OUT’s clinic provides services for free to the LGBTI community.
Bongani Nxumalo from Highveld stereo 94.7 will host the event and this black-tie benefit dinner will see guests entertained by Motown inspired Tokyo Groove, best known for their 2009 track “get down Saturday night.”
The event will also see three lucky guests winning a weekend away for two, worth between R4, 000 and R5, 000, courtesy of Alternative Travel.
The gala dinner is one of a number of events taking place in September to mark OUT’s 15th Anniversary. These include a series of Expert Discussions on 16 and 17 September on building and growing community organisations, as well as a rock and pop benefit concert on 18 September.”
