ABOUT US

Behind the Mask is a Non Profit media organization that publishes a news website covering news about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people in Africa.

Projects:
Journalism Training project
With the journalism training project (JTP) BTM identifies groups (mainly LGBTI people) from different African countries. These people are then trained from their respective countries on basic journalism skills, photojournalism and media laws in order to enable them to tell their stories in their own voices since the media had been found to be discriminatory towards and misrepresenting gay issues by either not reporting on such issues or even sensationalizing their stories. After training this group of people BTM expects them to contribute news stories, photographs and every little piece of information that they may have regarding LGBTI issues in their countries.

Countries already covered: Malawi, Kenya, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Uganda,

Video Advocacy Project
BTM identifies and trains LGBTI groups from different African countries on how to use video as a tool for advocacy, how to document their own stories using video, for evidence purposes in court, when lobbying governments, or sourcing funding etc.

Countries already covered: Kenya, Zambia, Uganda

Internship:
BTM recruits one person per year from any African country including South Africa to come and work in our offices.  It must be a person who is studying towards their Journalism Diploma or media studies. Here we share journalism skills with interns, such as advocacy journalism, how to write news, photojournalism etc.

Countries covered: South Africa, Cameroon, and Uganda

Fellowship
Here BTM recruits one person per year from any African country to come and work in our offices. The person must be interested in Human rights issues, activism, research, LGBTI issues etc. We then share skills with them on organizational development, movement building, research, activisim etc

Countries already covered: Eritrea, South Africa, Botswana, US

BTM in French
This is a project by BTM to ensure that people from countries where French is the main language, do not miss out on the issues that we publish. This project includes translation of all English articles covered by BTM into French in order to accommodate out French readers and constituencies.

The Link Project
The link project monitors human rights violations in Africa and assist in building linkages with civil society organizations with a view to mainstream LGBTI issues. The link also investigates documents and disseminates information related to human rights issues affecting LGBTI people in Africa.
